When we moved from our coastal home up to a colder climate, we bought a house with a fireplace. It seemed like the thing to do. If you live somewhere where it snows, you should have a fireplace. But coming from the south, I had no idea how to store firewood, where to get firewood from, or much less how to start a fire properly and keep it burning. Nothing I had to worry about before. Well, as you might be guessing, we never used our fireplace that first winter. Seemed like such a waste.
Our neighbors invited us for dinner one night and asked us about our fireplace. Sadly, I had to admit we had not even used it. I explained to them my lack of knowledge, feeling a little foolish, but they were real helpful. They told me I could find some good firewood storage shed plans online, they come complete with a material list, cut sheets and step by step instructions, even offered to help me put it together. Told him I would check into it.
Since I knew absolutely nothing about firewood storage sheds, I got online and did some research and then actually found a good set of firewood storage shed plans that would work well in our backyard. Unfortunately, I didn’t get it built before the snow set in. But I did find out where to get firewood. So I purchased a couple cords of wood and stacked it in the backyard. What I ended up with was a stack of wet and rotting firewood that I couldn’t even use. I was beginning to think this fireplace thing was more trouble than it was worth. But my wife really wanted to use it, so I promised her that when spring came I would build the storage shed.
I decided to start getting some pricing on material, so I took the firewood storage shed blueprints to 3 different lumber yards in our area to get quotes. I was amazed at the difference in prices for the exact same material. I obviously went with the lower price, which ended up saving me over 10% on my material cost.
The storage shed was actually quite easy to build, and my neighbor kept his work and helped me build it. The shed only has 3 walls and a roof, with plastic on the ground (to keep moisture out) and cinder blocks on top of the plastic to stack the wood on. My neighbor showed me how to stack the firewood loosely so that there is enough airflow to keep the wood dry and how to place mouse poison so that the dogs couldn’t get to it.
If you have a fireplace and need a place to store your firewood, you may want to consider building a firewood storage shed to protect your firewood. I also highly recommend that you get a good set of firewood storage shed plans, the plans will not only save you time and money, but a lot of unnecessary frustration. Also, don’t be afraid to take your plans to different lumber yards for price quotes, you will be able to save even more money.
Now that I have clean, dry firewood that will burn easily, I use the fireplace almost every night and absolutely love it.
